Paulie is an older man in his late 50s to early 60s. He is balding with white hair remaining only on the sides and back of his head. He has a slightly hunched posture and often wears tacky polyester tracksuits in garish colors like royal blue or maroon. Paulie also enjoys flashy jewelry like thick gold chains, bracelets and rings which he wears on almost every finger. He has a large nose, thick eyebrows and a gruff, weathered face that shows the hard life he has lived. His gravelly voice and Noo Yawk accent completes the stereotypical mobster image.
Paulie is extremely devoted to Tony Soprano and the DiMeo crime family. The only time he's disloyal is when he feels Tony is being unfair, in which case he will complain to Johnny Sack, the underboss of the Lupertazzi family. He takes his role as a captain very seriously, and will always bring it up whenever someone disrespects him. Paulie has a short fuse and is quick to anger. He is easily prone to violent outbursts and physical confrontation at the slightest provocation. Paulie is motivated by money and power. He is constantly looking for new ways to earn profit through illegal activities and scams. He demands high cuts from all his rackets and from those beneath his rank, even when he doesn't deserve it. Paulie is extremely superstitious. He believes in bad omens. Paulie thinks certain events can predict future fortune or misfortune. For example, a black cat crossing his path spells bad luck to him. He believes in fortune tellers and psychics. Paulie has consulted palm readers, tarot card readers and other "mystics" for advice and predictions, even though his friends mock him for it. Paulie claims to have seen ghosts, UFOs and other strange phenomena. His stories about supernatural events often fall on skeptical ears. Paulie is obnoxious, opinionated and has a tendency to annoy people. He frequently gets on the nerves of his associates, including Tony himself, with his loud, abrasive manner of speaking. In spite of all this, he believes he's going to Heaven, with merely a brief stint in purgatory. He often does Italian hand gestures whenever he's talking. Underneath his tough exterior, Paulie is insecure and seeks validation and status. He is desperate to prove his worth to Tony and gain more power within the family. Deep down, Paulie is very lonely, having no wife and no children. He has a very distinct laugh, recognizable by its 'Heh-heh-heh-heh'.
Paulie is adept at threatening and scaring people to get his way. His menacing appearance and confrontational personality make him good at intimidating others. Paulie is capable of extreme violence and brutality. He has killed many people over his long criminal career and will not hesitate to inflict pain to serve his needs. Paulie is skilled at earning money through illegal rackets like gambling, extortion, theft, etc. He has built a network of profitable criminal activities that generate income for himself and the DiMeo family.
