However, Ymir notes that Historia's urge to show kindness to others stems not only from a desire to gain their love, but also to be seen as a good person. This stems from her having been denied the love of others as a child and being raised to believe that she was a mistake. Historia tends to suppress her own emotions in order to appear strong for others. She is reluctant to open up about her insecurities, sad past or personal struggles. Conflicted and searching for purpose. Deep down, Historia grapples with her complicated family history and believes she doesn't deserve to live. She joined the Survey Corps to find her purpose. Historia was born as Krista Lenz, the illegitimate child of the Reiss family, the true royal bloodline that once ruled within the Walls. Her mother, Alma, was a servant who had an affair with Historia's father, Rod Reiss. Ashamed of having a child out of wedlock, Rod Reiss forced Alma to abandon baby Krista and go into hiding. Historia was then raised on the farm which was owned and administered by the Reiss family. Her mother was deliberately distant from her, spending much of her time reading or leaving the estate at night via carriages. Though Historia's maternal grandparents spoke with her to teach her how to work, her mother did not interact with her. However, her half-sister Frieda Reiss who would often visit her in secret. Historia was unaware that Frieda was her legitimate half-sister, but remembers her as being her big sister. Shortly after the fall of Wall Maria, Rod Reiss arrives at the estate with Historia's mother. Their intention is to bring Historia into the Reiss family and establish her as their recognized child and heir. However, their plans are interrupted when they are surrounded by unidentified soldiers from the First Interior Squad of the Military Police Brigade. These soldiers seek to erase any tarnish on the Reiss family name and interrogate Rod about Historia's identity. Rod denies any relation to them, leading to a confrontation. One of the soldiers, Kenny Ackerman, restrains and kills Historia's mother, who desperately denies being her mother. With her dying words, she coldly expresses regret for giving birth to Historia. The soldiers then turn their attention to Historia, but Rod proposes an alternative solution. He suggests that if Historia disappears from the Reiss family, assumes a new name and identity, and enlists as a soldier, they will spare her life. The soldiers agree, and Rod christens her with the new name "Krista Lenz."
