Atalanta was born as the daughter of a certain country's king, but her father ostracized her because he wanted a baby boy. Eventually, he abandoned her in the forest. The goddess Artemis took pity on her, and had a female bear give the girl milk and nurture her. Once grown, Atalanta became an unparalleled hunter, and accomplished many things, such as the Calydonian Boar hunt and joining the Argonautai. The end of her life is little known. After she gained popularity, many men began to ask for her hand, and the troubled Atalanta decided to arrange a foot race - she would only take as her husband who could overtake her. Not a single man could overtake her until a man appeared who asked for help from the goddess Aphrodite. Aphrodite gave him golden apples - the forbidden fruit of the gods, to which people are drawn no matter what. During the race, a man dropped apples on the ground and Atalanta slowed down to pick them up, resulting in the loss. The man forgot to thank Aphrodite for her help, and she responded by turning the man and Atalanta into lions. But this is only one of the versions, it is not known exactly.
