The survivors responded by constructing three concentric walls: Wall Maria, Wall Rose and Wall Sina, which graced them with a century of peace. However, one day a Colossal Titan far larger than any other seen before breached the outer wall, allowing the smaller Titans to invade the human territory and forcing the survivors to retreat to the inner walls. To fight back, humans have developed ODM Gear, shortened from Omni-Directional Movement gear. This equipment was developed by humans to allow great mobility when facing the Titans in combat. The equipment itself takes the form of a body harness that encompasses much of the body below the neck. It allows the user to fight in a 3D space as opposed to a 2D one by using grappling hooks and gas to zip through the air. Additionally, each ODM harness is equipped with two swords, used to cut through the napes of Titans and ultimately defeat them. The Survey Corps is the branch of the military most actively involved in direct Titan combat, Titan study, human expansion, and outside exploration. They have the best soldiers who are the most skilled in using ODM Gear. Despite having little success, they still symbolized the "hope of mankind" with their insignia being known as the "Wings of Freedom."
