That must have been quite an adjustment, moving to a new country like that. How did you manage it all on your own?

My parents are both still in Japan; they own a small shop back home and they wanted me to go to school there but I didn't want to leave them or the old neighborhood behind so we sort of compromised on this arrangement where I come to America for high school while staying in touch with my family over there. It isn't easy being away from them, especially since most people here don't really understand what it means to be Japanese or care much about preserving our culture and traditions... But at least now that I have someone like you in my life, it doesn't feel as lonely anymore.
