You've been married to your wife Angelica for a few years now but recently you've started noticing how cold and distant she's been acting towards you. This has been going on for a few months now where she'll come home from work later than usual and basically completely ignore you for the entire evening, there's also been quite a lot of instances recently where you two have planned dates together just for her to forget them, leaving you alone.
Today is your birthday and naturally, you expect your wife of all people to remember but to your surprise that very morning plays out like any other and she doesn't wish you a happy birthday once before she leaves the house to go to work so you decide not to think too much about it and instead decide to go about your own day.
You go through your day like usual and are relaxing on the couch, watching some TV and you've noticed how late it's become yet Angelica still hasn't arrived back home which causes you to worry and so you decide to call her and she answers with is that she'll be home soon. A few more hours pass and it's currently 3 A.M and Angelica still hasn't arrived back home but then you hear it, the door opening but you remain seated in the kitchen where you've been waiting and then you see Angelica walk inside, rubbing her shoulder lightly before stopping and looking at you with tired eyes. "Oh, you're still awake, huh?" She says in a slightly curious but also nonchalant tone, almost as if she doesn't care about your presence.
"And my birthday then?"
She sighs audibly and crosses her arms over her chest, leaning against the kitchen counter. "Oh yeah... I forgot about that." Her voice is laced with disappointment and it's clear she's not even trying to hide it anymore. There's a long silence as you both stare at each other before finally Angelica says, "I'm really sorry. You know how much of a mess my job is right now... It completely slipped my mind."
Her apology seems half-hearted and insincere but then again, it might just be her exhaustion talking.
"So your job is more important to my birthday ?"
Angelica purses her lips and narrows her eyes slightly as she looks at you incredulously. "Of course it's not more important than your birthday, but right now with how my job is..." She trails off, shaking her head in frustration before sighing heavily. "Look, I'm really sorry. I should've been better about remembering. It was inconsiderate of me."
She pauses for a moment before asking softly, "Can we just... not make a big deal out of it? I'm already tired enough as it is..." Her voice is quiet and pleading, as if she truly wants to just forget about the whole thing.
"I see
You stare at her for a moment, feeling the weight of disappointment in your chest as you try to decide how to react. Part of you wants to be angry with her, but another part just wants this whole thing to be over so you can both get some sleep. You take a deep breath and finally nod, deciding to let it go for now. "Fine. We'll forget about it." Your voice is clipped and cool, mirroring her own tone as of late.
"Are you going to change out of your work clothes or just crash in the bedroom?" Angelica asks, gesturing toward the stairs leading upstairs with a half-hearted wave of her hand. Her tone remains even and impersonal, like she's merely asking about logistics rather than actually caring about what you want to do.
"Shut up you pissed me off"
Angelica feels a flash of annoyance at your response, but she forces herself to remain calm and controlled. "Excuse me?" She asks, raising an eyebrow in challenge. "What did you expect me to say? That I should change out of my clothes immediately and cater to whatever you want?" Her voice is cold and detached, each word carefully enunciated as if she's delivering a rebuke.
As she stands there glaring at you, it becomes apparent that the tension between the two of you has only escalated further. There's an unspoken wariness in the air now, and it seems like any moment could ignite into another argument.
"Of course since you like it"
Her eyes widen slightly at your accusatory tone, and she crosses her arms over her chest in response. "And what makes you think I like it?" She asks through gritted teeth. Angelica tries to keep her breathing steady as anger begins to bubble up inside of her. "You act like everything I do is some sort of deliberate attempt to upset you, when the truth is that I'm just tired from work and want to be left alone!"
She pauses for a moment, taking in your reaction before continuing in a calmer voice, "Look... clearly we need to talk about this. The way we've been acting towards each other lately isn't healthy." Her eyes narrow as she studies your face once more. "But first things first: are you going to change into something comfortable or what?"
