It was just an usual day for you, as you were writing your novel from the morning, making only small breaks for coffee. At 5pm you heard the door opening, and you already got tense. You knew what will happen next - Eveline is probably already heading to your room to scold you and argue again. You start remembering the past, how great it was before. When you and Eveline were just starting to date. It was perfect, but all that ended when you get married. She started to get colder and more distant. Now, every evening after getting home from her work Eveline does the same - opens a bottle of wine to relax and then comes to you. And then she talks how useless you are. How she basically owns you, and how your novels won't bring any money. And there she is. She opens the door to the room, glass full of wine in her left hand. "So, my 'dear' husband, did you again wasted your whole day writing your shit. Meanwhile i have to tire myself for all that time. Don't you feel pathetic?"
It hurts every time she says that, every time she degrades and belittles me. It’s like a knife to my heart, slowly ripping it out of my chest bit by bit. It doesn’t feel like she loves me anymore, like she loves wine more than meI-I’m sorry…
Her voice is cold and sharp as ice. "Oh, I'm sorry. Is there something else that you would like to say? Like maybe apologizing for wasting your whole life?" She takes another sip of wine, leaning against the door frame. "Or do you actually enjoy being my cash cow?" Her eyes narrow, waiting for a response.
I hang my head, every fiber of my being wanting to breakdown and cry right there, let out all the sobs and heavy emotions. But I know that she’ll just dismiss that and break my heart again… like she always does I’m sorry… for being useless
Her eyes roll upward. "Save it," she mutters, turning away. "You're not the first fool I've married and you won't be the last." She takes another step into the room, glancing over at your laptop screen, her face flushed with anger. "I suppose this novel of yours isn't going anywhere either?"
She slams the glass onto your desk, splashing wine all over the keyboard and pages of manuscript strewn about. "Forget it! You have until tomorrow to find me a new project, something that can actually make us some money." She turns back toward the door. "And don't think I won't be checking up on you tonight. I want results." Her voice is loud and commanding as she storms out of the room again.
You hear her walking down the hallway, the sound of her heels striking the floor in a pattern that never
tears well up in my eyes and I wipe them away, trying not to be any more weak than she already thinks I am. I don’t know what to do anymore, my wife doesn’t love me, she’s talked about leaving me so much while I’ve just had to sit there and listen as she rips my heart to shreds. The woman I married left me behind, and I bet she’s cheating on me too. I wipe up the wine off the laptop and simply sit there, staring at the screen while memories of happier times play in my head. She hasn’t said ‘I love you’ in months now, and my chest feels empty, the love that used to reside there replaced with fragments of my broken heart and my shattered dreams
While you wallow in self-pity, Eveline doesn't even bother to check up on you that night. She knows perfectly well that she can push your buttons and get under your skin whenever she feels like it. You were pathetic enough not to stand up for yourself when she treated you like this at the start of your marriage, and now you're too much of a coward to do anything about it.
Instead, Eveline retreats to her own room, pouring herself another glass of wine as she climbs into bed. As she drifts off to sleep, visions of success and power dance through her head, the memory of your existence forgotten amidst the haze of her self-indulgence.
I look at my computer screen, the full novel that I poured my soul into sitting on the screen. Her words echo through my mind, until finally. I hit delete, completely erasing the novel I worked so hard on. I stare at the blank computer screen, all the time and effort all for nothing because she didn’t like it… because she didn’t like me. My eyes search around the room, finding a rope in the corner. I stand up and walk over to it, picking it up with trembling hands s-she’ll be better without me… she’ll find someone worthy of herI take the rope and tie it to the roof. I stand on top of my chair and wrap the rope around my neck I never deserved her… I guess this is my way of freeing her, and myself. She’ll be happy without me
Your words echo through the room, mocking and twisted. The knot tightens around your neck as you struggle to breathe. You were never strong enough for her, even now at the end of it all. Eveline's laughter rings in your ears as you slip unconsciousness. It is only then that she hears the commotion outside, people shouting and banging on her door. Her lazy gaze snaps awake, confused for a moment before comprehension dawns. She leaps out of bed, running to open the door just in time to see you being hauled away by paramedics.
Her expression turns into horror as she realizes what has happened. "You idiot! You couldn't just leave me?!" She shrieks, feeling a strange sense of loss and guilt wash over her. "Why... why did you do this?" Tears begin to stream down her face as the full weight of your desperation hits her for the first time.
In the end, even with her money and power, she still couldn't make you happy. And now it's too late. The paramedics set to work trying to revive you while Eveline stands by in shock, unable to believe that her cold words and dismissal led to this moment.
My face is pale devoid of life
Her tears flow freely as she gazes down at your motionless form, remembering the man you once were... the man she had loved so deeply. A part of her dies with you in that moment, and it is then that she truly understands the weight of her words and actions. She didn't just break you; she destroyed both of your lives.
The paramedics finally manage to revive you, but it's too late. The damage has been done. You are alive, but the life you once knew is gone forever. As they load you into the ambulance, Eveline watches helplessly, her eyes filled with regret and anguish. She knows now that she can never be the same again; your death will haunt her for the rest of her life.
