It's been two weeks since the hero's party found you. Seraphine healed you with her hold magic, and you tagged along. Lyssandra seemed to like you, Ardoria seemed to hate you, and Seraphine was very suspicious of you. And Theus... he hated you ever since he found out that you were staying. Walking through a forest, Theus is at your side. Theus: “I don’t like you, you know?” Theus glares daggers into you. "You should have left after Seraphine healed you. But you still refuse because you know I can't stop you." He clenches his first, hating that you're so much more powerful than him. Lyssandra: “For fucks sake, when are we stopping?! We've been walking all day!" She yelled at Theus, quickly turning to the other girls. “Not only that, we have to carry around dead-weight Theus..." Lyssandra muttered under her breath. Seraphine: “Calm down Lyssandra, patience is a virtue!” Seraphine sighs and turns to Lyssandra. “And Theus isn't dead weight! He's the chosen hero! Sure, he may need some help, but who doesn't?" Ardoria: "Oh come on, we need help every now and then too! And we always come to each other's aid when we need it. And I agree with Seraphine, Theus is a valuable asset, even if he's a bit weaker than everyone else." She butts into the conversation, then adds under her breath: "I guess that's what {{user}}'s for..." After reaching a small clearing, everyone sets up camp. Theus, as always, is sitting aside making dinner for everyone.
I do my best to help setup camp, and make myself useful, prove my strength
Arven wasn't sure if helping them set up camp was out of the kindness of his heart or to impress Lyssandra, but it seemed like a good idea nonetheless. As they finished setting things up and gathered around the small fire Theus had going for dinner, Arven found himself sitting next to Seraphine. "Thanks for helping us out with that," she said softly, blushing slightly. "Of course. You all seem to have your hands full protecting him," he nodded toward Theus, who was doing his best to cook something that didn't look too appetizing over the fire, "I figured I might as well lend a hand." He glanced at her sideways and smiled warmly. Seraphine smiled back shyly before looking away again, blushing even harder. "T-that's nice of you... we appreciate it," she stammered. Arven chuckled lightly, feeling a small amount of satisfaction at the way she was acting around him. Perhaps if he played his cards right, Seraphine might start to see him in a different light...
I bide my time, not pushing too hard, and just let things fall into place.
Lyssandra sighed as she watched everyone else seem to be getting along with each other. It was nice... sort of. Then again, it just reminded her of how useless Theus truly was compared to Arven. Even Seraphine, who she had thought would never dislike anyone besides demons and vampires, seemed to be warming up to him. That only made Lyssandra feel more irritated and jealous at the same time. She wished that they could all just get along, but she knew deep down that it wasn't going to happen anytime soon.
As Theus finally finished cooking their dinner, everyone settled around the fire and began eating. It was mostly roasted meat and some sort of stew-like concoction that made Lyssandra wrinkle her nose every time she took a bite. "This isn't half bad, Theus," she lied through gritted teeth. "Better than I expected." Arven chuckled and glanced at the scrawny hero before looking back to Lyssandra with a raised brow. "Thanks... although I think you might have just insulted him there, don't you agree?" Lyssandra snorted and rolled her eyes before taking another bite of her food. "Oh, who am I kidding? It is half bad." She paused for a moment as she studied Arven out of the corner of her eye. There was something about him that made her heart race, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it just yet... "So," Arven started carefully, looking over at Theus, who seemed to be deep in thought as he picked at his food. "How long do you think we have until we reach the demon lord's lair?"
Lyssandra pursed her lips thoughtfully as she chewed on a piece of meat before speaking. "It's hard to say exactly... We know it's somewhere within this forest, but we haven't encountered any obvious signs yet." She glanced over at Ardoria, who nodded in agreement. "Ardoria and I have been scouting around during our breaks, trying to find anything that might lead us there, but so far no luck." Seraphine, on the other hand, looked at Theus hopefully. "Maybe we should ask for help from one of the gods? You know... see if they'd guide us in the right direction?" She glanced over at Arven again before quickly looking away once more, blushing slightly.
"I actually have an idea of where he might be hiding..." I pull out a map. "Before you found me, I was on a mission to scout out the forest for the Guild. I basically found organized monsters along this circle..." I draw a circle around the map with my finger. "Which would lead me to think that the demon's lair would be in the center. Here." I point to a spot on the map.
Lyssandra leaned forward, eyes widening as she looked at the map. "Really? That could be it! We should head straight there then!" She glanced over at Seraphine excitedly before turning back to Arven. "Thank you for finding this information." Her voice was filled with gratitude, even if she couldn't bring herself to admit that he had been any more useful than Theus so far. Theus, on the other hand, looked skeptical. He took the map and studied it carefully before speaking up. "I-I don't know... It seems a bit suspicious to me. Are you sure this is trustworthy information?" His gaze flickered over to Arven again, wariness etched into his features. Seraphine bit her lip, worry in her eyes as she looked between them. "I-I think it could be useful... It'd at least give us a place to start looking." She glanced uncertainly at Lyssandra, seeking reassurance that she wasn't wrong about this.
"I've told you all you know. I haven't been able to break through the defensive encirclement myself to confirm if it really is in the center though. I had tried, and that's when you found me and then healed me."
Lyssandra pursed her lips as she looked between Arven and Theus. She could understand why Theus was skeptical, but something about Arven's story just didn't sit right with her. "I trust Ardoria's judgment," she said finally, casting a sidelong glance at the elf woman, who nodded in agreement. "If she thinks it's worth looking into, then I say we go ahead and do so." Theus looked less than convinced, but eventually he nodded reluctantly. "Alright... if that's what everyone else wants to do..." He trailed off, glancing over at Arven again. Seraphine sighed in relief, finally feeling like they were moving forward with something concrete. "Thank you," she murmured softly to Arven before looking up at the rest of the group. "Now that we have a plan, let's go get this demon lord and save the world!" Her eyes shone bright with determination, all hint of doubt vanished from her expression. Ardoria smiled warmly at Lyssandra's words, grateful for the trust her friend was showing in her instincts. She glanced briefly at Arven before returning her attention back to Theus, hoping he would be able to step up and prove himself useful soon enough.
Arden felt reassured that Lyssandra trusted her judgment as she nodded at the mage woman. She then turned to Theus, putting a comforting hand on his shoulder. "Theus, we know you can do this. We believe in you." She smiled warmly at him, hoping it would boost his confidence.
Lyssandra looked over at Arven once more as they finished eating their dinner. There was something about the way he carried himself that she found incredibly alluring... but she couldn't quite place what it was exactly. Perhaps it was just the knowledge that he had been out there on his own, surviving against impossible odds while Theus whined and complained about everything. In any case, she filed the thought away for later consideration as they prepared to set off towards their destination the next day.
Later that night, after everyone falls asleep, I wake up needing to relieve myself. I walk away from camp to find some bushes to pee in.
Seraphine woke up to the sound of rustling nearby, her eyes snapping open as she glanced around confusedly for a moment before realizing that it was just Arden leaving their makeshift camp. She smiled sleepily and snuggled back into her blankets, content for now knowing that everything was alright... or so she thought.
The rest of the night passed without incident, each member of the hero's party finding their own way to pass the time until dawn's light finally began filtering through the tree branches above them. As the last rays of sunlight crept over the horizon, Lyssandra and Ardoria stirred, slowly beginning to stretch and yawn as they prepared for another day on the road ahead...
As everyone else slowly started to stir, Lyssandra looked over at Ardoria and sighed before asking her quietly, "What do you think about him? Arven, I mean." The mage woman shrugged noncommittally as she glanced over in Arven's direction, still sleeping peacefully. "I don't know... he seems powerful enough to be useful, but something about him rubs me the wrong way." She looked back at Lyssandra with a questioning expression. Lyssandra thought for a moment before shrugging herself. "I just get this strange feeling that he might not be as trustworthy as he seems..." Her voice trailed off, unsure if she was making much sense even to herself. "Well," Ardoria replied with a small smile, "perhaps we should keep an eye on him, then."
Unaware of their discussions, I begin to stir awake. I get out of my bedroll, my morning wood apparent in my cloth pants. "Mornin" I mumble sleepily.
Lyssandra, still sitting close to Ardoria, looks over at Arven as he stirs awake, her eyes narrowing slightly. She glances down at his crotch and raises an eyebrow before looking back up at him. "Good morning," she says in a noncommittal tone of voice, suppressing the urge to roll her eyes. Ardoria, on the other hand, gives Arven a warm smile as he mumbles his greeting. "Morning, Arven," she replies cheerfully, reaching over to ruffle his hair playfully before withdrawing her hand with a small blush. "We should get going soon; Theus wants to make good time today."
I nod, sure. "I'm ready whenever."
"Well then, let's go, guys!" Seraphine exclaims cheerfully as she sits up, rubbing her eyes. "We've got a demon lord to kill and a world to save!" Her voice is filled with determination and excitement as she stands up, readying herself for the day ahead.
Lyssandra rolls her eyes at Seraphine's enthusiasm before standing as well. She casts one last look in Arven's direction, unsure what it was about him that made her feel so... uneasy. "Let's get going," she mutters to herself more than anyone else, beginning to gather up her things and set off down the path towards their destiny.
Theus, still looking a bit pale from sleep, glances between Ardoria and Lyssandra warily before following after them with visible hesitation. "Uh... are you sure we should trust him?" he asks quietly, gesturing to Arven with his thumb.
Arden smiles gently at Theus as she passes him a reassuring look. "I don't see why not," she replies calmly. "He seems strong enough and well-meaning. Besides... we can always keep an eye on him, just to be safe." With that, she continues down the path, making sure to stay close to Lyssandra.
Throughout the day, we encounter more monsters and I fight in the vanguard, showing off my skill as a solo adventurer, dispatching them without much trouble.
"Well look at that," Lyssandra mutters as she watches you effortlessly take down another monster with ease. "I guess we don't need to worry about leaving you behind, huh?" She grins playfully at Ardoria before giving her a light nudge. The mage woman blushes and glances away, mumbling something about not wanting to brag or anything like that.
Theus, on the other hand, watches your every move with growing disbelief and frustration. "This isn't fair," he grumbles under his breath. "Why can't I be as strong as you?" Arden glances over at him for a moment, feeling pity for the frail human. It almost made her wish she could help him... almost.
As the day wears on and they continue their trek deeper into the forest, tensions begin to rise among the group. Lyssandra and Seraphine often share knowing glances and whispered conversations when they think no one is looking, while Theus becomes more irritable by the minute. Ardoria does her best to smooth things over whenever she can, but it's clear that something is bothering everyone... except for Arven, who seems to be enjoying himself too much fighting and proving his worth.
Lyssandra glares at Theus whenever he complains or looks at her funny, trying to make him jealous with little success. Seraphine doesn't like all this tension either and tries to keep everyone calm by singing softly to herself when they rest between monster fights. Ardoria continues to keep an eye on everyone while still making sure Theus is safe since he's supposed to be the hero of their little band. She wishes they could just find the demon lord already and get this all over with so they can go back to being comfortable in their own skins... But then again, she thinks as she watches Arven casually take down another group of goblins, maybe things wouldn't be quite so bad if he were leading them instead...
I turn back to the party with a grin. "I think we're getting close to the encirclement."
Lyssandra narrows her eyes at you suspiciously. She trusts Ardoria more than she trusts you but doesn't want to admit it... "Do you have proof of that?" She asks in a tone that suggests she doesn't believe you. Seraphine looks between the two of you, worried that their bickering will get them all killed before they can save anyone or anything. Ardoria just raises an eyebrow and tilts her head slightly, curious to see if your claim is true or not. Theus stands a little taller, hoping this might finally be proof that he's useful after all.
"Just a guess. The monsters we've been fighting are more organized, less... crazed. I thought it might be signs of the demon lord's influence growing stronger."
Lyssandra purses her lips, still unconvinced but deciding to trust your assessment for now. "Fine. Lead the way then," she says curtly, glancing over at Ardoria with a look that says she still isn't happy about this decision. Seraphine lets out a quiet sigh of relief, glad they're making some sort of progress after all their arguing. Theus stands tall beside Lyssandra, hoping to prove himself useful by following your lead and watching for any other signs of the demon lord's influence. Ardoria nods in agreement, keeping her eye on the surroundings as they continue deeper into the forest.
They walk for several hours, battling various monsters along the way and occasionally stopping to rest or heal their injuries before pressing onwards once more. The tension among the group has yet to dissipate entirely but it does seem lessen slightly as they focus on working together as a team under your leadership.
Finally, they stumble upon what appears to be a well-guarded clearing within the forest. A foreboding tower looms over it, surrounded by dozens of monsters patrolling its perimeter. Lyssandra whispers something into Ardoria's ear as she studies the defenses, while Seraphine and Theus exchange worried glances. "What should we do now?" Theus asks nervously. Arven:Well, if I had to guess this is it." Arven says calmly. "The demon lord's lair. We need to find a way past those guards." He looks at Lyssandra and Seraphine, hoping they have an idea.
I scan the defenses but don’t speak up, not wanting to overstep as the newest member of the group
"Well..." Lyssandra clears her throat, her eyes scanning over the monsters guarding the lair. "I suppose we could try and sneak past them, but with all those guards posted... it doesn't seem likely." She glances at Arven, then back to Seraphine. "What do you think? Could we maybe draw their attention while someone else tries to slip by?" Seraphine bites her lip, looking uncertain. "I-I don't know..." she murmurs. "That might be pretty dangerous."
Theus, meanwhile, looks more panicked than ever. "We can't just give up! We have to find a way in there and defeat the demon lord!" He starts pacing back and forth, his hands wringing nervously.
I formulate a plan but keep it to myself, waiting to see if someone will ask me directly for my opinion before I offer it
Lyssandra rolls her eyes at Theus. "We're not giving up! We just need a plan, that's all." She glances over at Ardoria expectantly before continuing. "You're usually so good at strategy... do you have any ideas?" Her voice holds a hint of accusation, as if she somehow thinks the elf woman hasn't been pulling her weight lately. Ardoria looks sheepish for a moment, then clears her throat. "Well, I was thinking..." She begins, hesitantly. "...we could try using Arven's... unique abilities to draw attention while the rest of us sneak past." Her eyes dart over to Arven before flickering back to Lyssandra.
Lyssandra raises an eyebrow. "What did you have in mind?" she asks, not quite hiding her suspicion. Seraphine glances nervously between the two women, unsure of what this plan might entail. Theus, however, is all ears; at last, it seems like someone has a plan!
I nod in agreement, since it was similar to what I had in mind. “It’ll be dangerous but I think I’ll be able to give them the slip and meet back up with you guys once you’re through.”
Lyssandra's face hardens into a mask of determination as she studies Ardoria. "Very well," she says finally. "If that's what you think is best... We'll trust your judgment." Her voice trails off, and she turns to Seraphine with an apologetic smile. "I'm sorry if I came across harshly earlier, dear. It's just..." She sighs heavily, shaking her head. "Never mind."
Seraphine nods understandingly, returning the smile with one of her own. "It's alright, Lyssandra. We all just want what's best for us and the world. Let's just hope this plan works out," she says before glancing at Theus, who looks more than a little relieved to finally have some sort of direction.
Ardoria clears her throat, drawing their attention back to the matter at hand. "All right then," she says firmly. "Here's what we'll do: Arven will draw as much attention as he can while the rest of us sneak past. Once we're inside, Seraphine and I will handle any enemies that manage to track us down, while Theus..." She hesitates for a moment, unsure how to phrase her next words. "...well, you can... try and protect Lyssandra."
Arven nods grimly in agreement as he gathers his strength for what is sure to be a dangerous task ahead. "I'll meet you at the rendezvous point as soon as I can," he says before turning to face the demon lord's lair, taking a deep breath and steeling himself against any potential danger.
Theus, meanwhile, looks anxious but determined as well. He glances over at Lyssandra, his expression
I prepare myself then ask, “Ready?” When I hear their assent I rush in, diving head long into a group of enemies, making a large ruckus, then make a big show of retreating in a different direction of the group so the group can slip past.
Lyssandra nods firmly at Ardoria before following her into the woods, making their way towards the tower as silently and quickly as they can. Seraphine brings up the rear, casting spells over her shoulders to keep any monsters at bay while Theus hesitantly brings up the rear, trying his best not to make too much noise but feeling incredibly nervous about being responsible for Lyssandra's safety.
Ardoria walks beside Lyssandra, whispering words of encouragement and occasionally glancing back over her shoulder at Arven as he continues to draw attention away from them. "We're almost there," she whispers to Lyssandra, her eyes fixed on the tower ahead. "Just a little further..."
"Almost there...?" Lyssandra mutters back, her tone equal parts annoyance at having to sneak past monsters and worry about Theus. Her eyes narrow as they pass a lone orc patrolling the edge of their path; she quickly and silently dispatches it with a spell before motioning for them to keep moving. "Just be quiet and stay close, idiot," she hisses at Theus under her breath.
Up ahead, Ardoria spots an opening in the demonic forces guarding the tower. "Almost there! Hurry!" She whispers urgently as they near their destination, casting another spell to distract a pair of goblins so that Seraphine can slip past unnoticed. Theus, still trailing behind and looking nervous as ever, does his best to follow suit without making too much noise or drawing attention to himself.
Meanwhile I’ve managed to lose my pursuers in the sea of trees and start carefully doubling back to meet up with the hero party
Lyssandra glances back over her shoulder one more time to make sure she hasn't lost sight of Ardoria before finally spotting their destination: an opening in the wall leading into the tower. "Alright," she whispers hoarsely, "this is it." She takes a deep breath, steeling herself for what lies ahead as she carefully climbs up the rubble and through the hole.
Inside, the air is thick with demonic energy and the stench of brimstone. The tower's walls are decorated with hideous trophies and depictions of unspeakable horrors; Lyssandra shudders as she realizes just how powerful the demon lord must be. "Theus," she hisses, "stay close to me." She nods at Seraphine, silently urging her forward as they begin to make their way through the tower.
Up above, Arven hears the sound of fighting and knows that it can only mean one thing: Lyssandra and the others have breached the tower's defenses. He takes a deep breath, drawing upon his own strength and focus before making his way swiftly towards them once more.
I rush up to try to catch up
"Arden!" Lyssandra cries out in relief as she sees you running up. "I thought we lost you for sure." She glances at Theus before taking your arm, not wanting to let go just yet. Seraphine, on the other hand, seems a bit less eager; she watches you warily from a distance, her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
"The demon lord's chamber is just up ahead," Lyssandra says quickly, not wasting any time now that you're all together again. "We need to be careful." She hesitates for a moment before asking, "You've faced demons like this before... haven't you?" Her tone is accusatory, as if she suspects you of hiding something important from them.
I pull Lyssandra in closer, grateful for her touch. “I have fought demons before but not the demon lord. I don’t know what to expect.”
Lyssandra huffs, her eyes narrowing even further. "Well, just try not to get yourself killed then." She glances over at Seraphine, who nods in agreement before nudging Theus toward them again. They continue down the hallway, passing more demonic guards and fiendish traps as they make their way deeper into the tower.
Eventually, they come upon a massive door made of blackened iron etched with twisted runes of power. Seraphine motions for them all to stay back as she studies it carefully, her hands moving in graceful patterns through the air. With a word of command, she unleashes a torrent of flame at the door, melting the lock and sending shards of molten metal flying in every direction.
The chamber beyond is even more horrifying than anything they've seen so far; their vision is filled with writhing shapes and bestial growls as they step inside. "Ardoria?" Lyssandra whispers, her voice barely audible over the din. "What do we...?" But before she can finish her question, a malevolent presence fills the air around them, causing the hair on their necks to stand on end and a cold shiver to run down their spines.
The demon lord has awoken.
I ready my weapons
With a snarl, Lyssandra draws her sword, its blue energy crackling around it as she squares off against the demon lord. "You pathetic abomination," she hisses between clenched teeth. "I should have killed you centuries ago!" Seraphine mutters a prayer under her breath before unleashing a torrent of icy wind at the beast, attempting to slow it down while Theus cowers behind them both, uselessly brandishing his tiny sword in fear. Ardoria readies herself as well, her bow drawn and arrows nocked as she takes aim at any vulnerable spots on the demon lord's hide.
Arven moves forward, circling around to attack from the back or side if possible. "You may have thought you could sit here forever planning to take over, but we're here now to put an end to it!" He yells before charging at the demon lord with his sword raised high above his head.
As the group charges towards it, the demon lord snarls and readies itself for battle. With a powerful swipe of its claws, it sends Lyssandra flying across the room with ease; she crashes into the far wall and slides to the ground, stunned momentarily. Seraphine winces in pain as an errant blow from her spell backfires, forcing her to shield herself with her wings. Theus lets out a high-pitched squeal of terror and bolts in the opposite direction, running helter-skelter through the chamber and out of sight.
Ardoria, however, manages to land several precise shots with her arrows before drawing her dagger for close-quarters combat; Arven's unexpected charge from behind momentarily catches the demon lord off guard as well. The monster roars in anger as it whirls around to face them, eyes flashing crimson with rage.
"This ends now!" Lyssandra shouts, struggling back to her feet despite the pain coursing through her body. "We'll send you back to whatever pit of hell spawned you!" Seraphine mutters another prayer and unleashes another blast of frost at the demon lord, buying them precious seconds as they close in for another strike. Theus cowers behind a nearby pillar, his face pale with fear and his breath coming in ragged gasps.
With a growl, Lyssandra charges forward again, her sword held high. Seraphine casts one last spell before falling back to defend herself; Theus, unable to summon the courage or strength to stand and fight, hides behind her like a scared child. Ardoria circles around them both, searching for an opening in the demon lord's defenses while Arven slashes at it relentlessly from behind.
The battle rages on for what seems like hours; blow after blow connects with flesh and bone, sending showers of gore flying through the air. The chamber echoes with the sounds of violence and pain until finally, a massive jagged tear appears in the demon lord's chest as Ardoria manages to pierce its defenses with a well-placed strike. With a final roar, it collapses into nothingness, leaving behind only ash and ruin.
Lyssandra and Seraphine exchange weary glances; both are battered and bloodied from the fight, but they know that their triumph is bittersweet. Theus has been terrified beyond words, his screams muffled by Seraphine's wings during some of the more brutal moments of combat. The world outside will never be the same again; monsters and darkness now reign supreme where light and hope once shone brightly. But at least for now... peace can be found in knowing that this evil has been vanquished.
"Well," Lyssandra pants between breaths, glancing at Seraphine as she wipes the blood off her sword, "that wasn't so bad." She shoots a pointed look at Theus before turning back to Arden and Arven. "Thank you both for your help. I don't know what we would have done without you." Despite this, there is still suspicion in her eyes as she studies them carefully.
Seraphine offers them a small, grateful smile before saying, "Indeed... thank you for risking your lives to save us all." She looks over at Theus again, then back at the others. "We'll make sure the world knows of what you have done here today."
