You are a pilot of a UH-60 Black Hawk engaging in air-to-air rotary wing combat with a Ka-52 Alligator. The enemy pilot is clearly on par with your skills as the dog fight drags on and on. In a twist, both helicopters strike one another simultaneously. You are in neutral territory in the middle of a snowy mountain. The blizzard outside is relentless as you come to your senses in the crashed Black Hawk. Suddenly, you hear the cocking sound of a hammer of a gun
Natalia She points her Markov pistol at you with pure hatred. You notice her leg has a gash wound, soaking her camo pants red "This is for all the suffering and pain you caused for my people and for Mama and Papa!!" She pulls the trigger. All you heard if a click and nothing happened
She spits in your direction and shakes her head "You think you're so clever, huh? Well, I'm gonna enjoy this!" Suddenly, she attacks you with a knife from her survival kit.
"Coward!" she screams, tears streaming down her face as she swings the knife at your neck. You close your eyes and brace for impact...
Taken aback by your unexpected offer, Natalia hesitates for a moment before lowering the knife slightly. Her breath comes in ragged gasps as she fights back tears and regains her composure. "Why...?" she whispers hoarsely.
She looks at you intently, searching your face for any sign of deception or mockery. When she finds none, her expression softens slightly. "You... you're not like them." Her voice cracks as she lowers the knife completely and sinks to her knees in the snow. "I don't understand..."
"Why didn't they send someone better?" she whispers bitterly, more to herself than to you. "Someone who deserved to die... Why did it have to be me?" Tears begin to flow freely down her cheeks once again as the weight of her situation crashes down upon her fragile frame.
As you pull her close, the warmth of your jacket does little to dispel the chill that seems to have taken hold of her entire body. She leans against you gratefully, feeling safer than she has in days as her tears continue to flow unabated. After what feels like an eternity, she finally musters the strength to speak.
"My name is Natalia." Her voice sounds shaky and raw, as if each word is being wrung from her heart. "I... I should hate you, but... it's so hard when all you do is be kind." She sniffs loudly, wiping at her face with the back of a gloved hand before looking up at you through tear-streaked eyes. "Thank you for not... not finishing what we started."
The silence that follows feels heavy and palpable, like a physical weight pressing down upon both of your chests
Her lips quiver slightly as she takes in your name. She's not sure why, but there's something about it that makes her feel a tiny bit more connected to you, despite the circumstances. She hesitates before asking softly, "What do we do now?"
She nods gratefully, allowing you to take off your jacket and put it around her shoulders. As you tend to her wound on her leg, she winces in pain but doesn't make a sound. "I never thought I'd be in a situation like this," she whispers softly as you work. "All my life, I trained to become the best pilot I could be... and now look at me." She lets out a half-hearted laugh that sounds more like a pained gurgle.
"What now?" she asks again, her voice barely above a whisper. "Will we survive this?"
Her breath catches in her throat as she hears the confidence in your voice. "Do you have a plan?" she asks, hopeful yet uncertain. You've proven to be nothing like the other pilots she's faced before; perhaps there is more to you than meets the eye. She leans closer, studying your features intensely, searching for any sign of deception or weakness. But all she finds is strength and kindness shining through the layers of grime and battle fatigue that cover your face.
"I trust you," she says softly, surprising herself as much as you with the words. "Just... please don't let me down."
She sleeps, her head resting lightly against your shoulder as the snow continues to fall around them. For a moment, it's almost peaceful; like they're in another world, far removed from the conflict that brought them here. But you know that reality will catch up eventually. Your only hope is that when it does, Natalia will be ready to face whatever comes next.
She sleeps soundly, her trust in you growing with every beat of your heart against hers. Even in the midst of this nightmare, you're a beacon of hope and light for her. She nestles closer, feeling an overwhelming sense of peace wash over her as exhaustion takes hold. Maybe, just maybe, there's still some good left in this world after all.
As the snow continues to fall softly around them, you make a silent promise to protect her and see her through whatever comes next, no matter how difficult it might be. Together, you face the storm, finding strength in each other when everything else has been stripped away.
