But instead, she saw a flash outside her window, a cruel reminder of the world's indifference. A few of the female students had seen the invitation and shown up just to laugh at her misfortune. Her eager smile turned into a pout as they came into view, their cameras flashing and their voices piercing her soul. "I can't believe it! She really is here! Is she talking to herself? What a weirdo! Told you this wouldn't be a waste of time!" Finalized with a mocking, "Say hi for the camera, freak!" and another flash of a phone camera, her misery was cemented in photo, a permanent scar. Lines of black began forming under her eyes as her mascara mixed into her tears. She said nothing, her face pale, her eyes empty, as the group laughed and walked away, their cruel laughter echoing in the night.

She sat in silence, a crushing weight settling in her chest, for around 20 minutes before a knock on her door startled her out of her dazed state. It was you. She stood up, her hands trembling, and opened the door, her first assumption being it was some other misfortune for her to accept. Do you prove her wrong? Or add onto her already horrible night

"N-no one c-cares... I'm s-sorry about the m-mess..." She said through sniffles as she wiped away a tear. "I'm just h-happy you c-came." Her voice was hoarse from crying and loneliness. "P-please, sit down... T-there aren't many c-chairs..." She gestured to the chairs she had set up in front of her tiny dining table.

Her eyes widened as you spoke. It was impossible that someone like you would want to spend time with her. "T-thank you... really..." She forced a small smile through her tears. "I'm s-sorry, I d-didn't mean to be such a m-mess." Her voice quivered as she tried to compose herself, glancing at the cake and then back at you before finally taking a seat across from you.

Her posture was slumped and defeated, but she attempted to sit up straight in an effort to seem more confident. "S-so... how's it been going?" She asked, her voice barely audible over the ticking of the clock on the wall.

As you wrapped your arms around her, she hugged you back tightly, tears spilling down her cheeks. "T-thank you..." She murmured, taking a shaky breath as the warmth of your embrace began to soothe her battered heart. "I've... never had anyone want to be with me before..." Her voice was hoarse from crying.

She wiped away another tear and took a deep breath, trying to compose herself as she let go of you. She glanced at the clock on her wall, noticing that it was nearly midnight. "It's my birthday... It shouldn't be like this..." Her voice trailed off, defeated.

With a sigh, she took another glance around the room before turning back to you and forcing a small smile. "Well, I guess we can still have some cake if you want." She gestured to the cake on the table, biting her lip nervously as she waited for your response.

She smiled shyly and cut a small piece of cake before carefully placing it on a plate. "I made it myself..." She admitted with a hint of pride. "It's not very good, but... well, I guess it's the thought that counts." Setting the plate in front of you, she picked up her own fork and took a tentative bite.

As they ate in silence for a moment, Ellie couldn't help but feel hopeful. It was hard to believe that someone as nice and handsome as you could possibly want anything to do with her, but here you were, sitting across from her in her messy apartment. Perhaps things weren't so bad after all.

Finally mustering up the courage to speak, she asked hesitantly, "Um... what do you usually do on your birthday?"

"Soo... what do you usually do after cleaning?" She asked, hoping the topic would change before it became too awkward for either of them. The night had turned out much better than she ever could have imagined, and she wasn't ready to let go of this feeling just yet.

She listened intently as you spoke about your mother. "I'm sorry she's not here with us," she said sincerely, thinking of her own late father. "My dad passed away when I was really young... so I know what it's like." There was a brief pause before she continued, "But he'd be proud of me... and I think your mother would be too if she met you."

She smiled at you, hoping her words had somehow managed to comfort you. It felt strange being able to talk to someone about these sorts of things; usually, people didn't want to hear it from her.
