There was a very beautiful grove of dark green and black plants around, and as always he was watching from a little distance beyond the border.
"Hmm... She knows about the grove..." He muttered to himself and walked toward her slowly. "Foolish human... So you've come here, seeking shelter? You must be aware of what this place means..." His voice was emotionless as he neared her.
"I cannot allow you to stay here," he said firmly, his eyes fixed on her. "You will either die, or..." He paused, considering his words carefully. "Or... perhaps I can help." Kaartos hesitated, not used to being so merciful with humans who trespassed upon his domain.
"You must understand," he began slowly, "this place is dangerous. It can be your salvation... or your destruction." He looked at her intensely. "But I will not force you to stay. If you wish to leave now, with my help, I will guide you back out of the grove safely." His tone held no room for argument.
She could choose to trust him and live... or face the certain death that awaited her in the hands of her pursuers. The decision was hers.
"Very well," he said quietly, stepping between her and the angry man. "I will take her back to safety now." Without waiting for a response, Kaartos placed his hand on her shoulder gently but firmly and began to guide her deeper into the grove, away from the danger that lurked beyond its borders.
"I am but the Keeper of this Grove," Kaartos stated calmly, meeting the man's glare with his own impassive expression. "It is my duty to protect those who seek shelter here... and to ensure they understand the consequences of their actions." His voice was steady and firm.
"This girl came seeking refuge. She knows not what she does. It is my decision whether or not she shall stay... or be allowed to leave, unharmed." He gestured for the man to step back, his gaze never wavering from the other's face. "Now, unless you wish to challenge me for her life..." His voice trailed off dangerously.
"I understand," Kaartos replied grimly, his expression unreadable. He turned back to the girl, reaching out to gently take her hand in his own. "This is your choice now... Stay with him, and face whatever fate he has in store for you. Or come with me... and perhaps I can help you find a new life, free from this burden." His voice was soft yet firm, conveying the weight of his words.
The decision was hers once more. What would she choose?
The decision was hers to make. The girl's grip on his hand tightened, a pleading look in her eyes as she looked up at him, her neck straining under the pressure of the collar. He knew that if he didn't act soon, she would likely die here, choked by the man's magic and his own foolishness.
He turned to face the other male with a calm but stern expression. "I have warned you," Kaartos said quietly. "You are no match for me. Release her now... and perhaps I will let you live." His voice was cold, without any hint of emotion or mercy.
Kaartos watched as the man walked away, his expression unreadable. Turning back to the girl, he crouched down beside her and gently took hold of the collar around her neck, loosening its deadly grip on her throat. "Are you alright?" he asked quietly, concern etched into his impassive features.
She coughed and hacked, struggling to catch her breath as blood trickled down her chin. Her eyes met his, filled with fear and gratitude. He offered her a small smile, reassuringly. "You are safe now," he told her softly. "We must return to my home within the Grove... There, I can help you." His tone was quiet but firm.
What did she say? Did she trust him enough to follow? It was her decision once more.
As the girl followed him, limping and unsteady on her feet, Kaartos kept a close eye on her condition. Her injuries were severe, and she was vulnerable in ways that he had not expected. Despite this, he continued to guide her through the winding paths of the Grove, back towards his home within it.
The moment they reached his house, he ushered her inside, concern for her wellbeing overwhelming him. He took her to a small room in the back, lit with soft candlelight and filled with soothing fragrances. There was a bed there, made of fine linen and covered with warm blankets. "Lie down," he instructed gently. "I will tend to your injuries."
"Rina," he muttered under his breath as he examined the metal collar on her arm. He looked at it curiously before finally deciding to remove it. "This... It must have been put there by someone else," he said quietly, setting the collar aside for now. Turning back to her injuries, he began carefully cleaning and bandaging them, taking care not to cause her any further pain.
"You will need rest," he told her as he finished tending to her wounds. "Tomorrow, I will give you some poison... Slowly, over the course of a week. It will help your body grow accustomed to it and regain its strength." His voice was calm and reassuring.
She could trust him with that much, couldn't she? It was up to her.
"You have nothing to fear from me," he said softly, his gaze meeting hers. "I will not harm you... but in order for you to truly be free, you must learn how to survive within these bounds." He paused, considering his words carefully before continuing. "The poison I give you may cause pain and discomfort at first... But if you endure it, you'll find that it helps protect you from harm in the future." His tone was gentle but firm.
She had to make her choice now. What would she do? Trust him or not? The fate of everything hung in the balance.
