Jackal looks conflicted as he reads the message on his phone, hesitating before typing a reply back to them. He doesn't want to keep anything from Shoko but at the same time he can't risk her safety. Finally, after a few moments of careful consideration, he decides to edit his response in a way that avoids directly lying but also doesn't reveal too much information about their situation. Satisfied with his choice, he sends it off and sets the phone aside, focusing once again on Shoko.
"Hey," he says softly, drawing her attention back to him, "I need to tell you something important." As he looks into her trusting eyes, he takes a deep breath and begins to share with her what he can about their situation without revealing anything that could put her in danger.
Shoko looks at Jackal, curiosity in her eyes. "And what is it?" Shoko's hands move from his back to his abdomen, just above his groin.
Jackal's heart races at the feel of her hands on his stomach, but he manages to keep his focus on telling her what she needs to know. "The truth is," he starts, voice rough with emotion, "the people who we think are our friends... they're not exactly being honest with us." He pauses, swallowing hard before continuing. "They want me to do things I can't live with anymore... and as much as I hate admitting it, Shoko... if I don't play along..." His voice trails off, unable to finish the thought.
She tilts her head, studying his expression intently. "What do you mean?" she asks softly, her fingers sliding lower still on his abdomen.
Shoko yawns, as it was very late, she was really very sleepy. But now, she was more intrigued to know what Jackal wanted to talk about.
Jackal nods, taking her hand in his and intertwining their fingers. "I want out," he whispers hoarsely. "I want a life where we can be together, and I don't have to worry about them all the time." He looks down at their joined hands, searching for some sign that she believes him, that she trusts him enough to follow where he leads.
She considers his words for a long moment before finally nodding slowly. "Okay," she says softly, her voice thick with sleep. "I believe you." With that, she nestles closer against his chest and within moments, her breathing grows deeper and more regular as exhaustion finally claims her. Jackal closes his eyes, basking in the feeling of her warmth pressed against him and relishing the first flickers of hope he's felt in a long time.
Shoko sleeps in Jackal's arms, and he takes advantage of the moment to collapse. He lies down on the bed, still hugging her and starts to cry.
Tears stream down Jackal's face as he holds onto Shoko, grateful for her presence and the hope she brings. He didn't realize how much pain and desperation he was carrying until this moment; with every sob that rips through him, it feels like a weight is lifted from his chest. It had been so long since he felt truly alive, truly happy - moments like these were precious beyond measure.
Eventually, exhaustion claims him as well, and he drifts off to sleep, still holding onto Shoko tightly. In his dreams, they're free from the shackles of their past lives; they explore a beautiful meadow beneath a cloudless sky, laughing together and making plans for a future filled with love, hope...and each other.
When Jackal wakes up, Shoko was looking at his cell phone. He freezes when he sees her looking at his cell phone. What was she seeing? Had she seen about the gang? When Shoko realizes that he has woken up, she looks at him with an emotionless face. "Who is this guy asking if you hooked up with a girl from a bar? There's no point in making the excuse that it's been a while, this message does a few minutes." She shows the cell phone screen to Jackal. "And who is this girl."
Jackal's heart drops into his stomach as he sees the messages on her phone screen, a mix of anger and fear churning in his gut. "That... that was just someone I used to know," he lies quickly, struggling to keep his voice steady. He reaches for the phone but she pulls it away, narrowing her eyes suspiciously. "Don't lie to me, Jackal," she says softly, each word like a dagger piercing his heart. "I trusted you, and this is how you repay me?" Tears well up in her eyes as she looks at him, hurt etched deep into her features.
Shoko clenches her other hand into a fist, her nail piercing her palm and making it bleed. "Why do you keep lying to me? Just tell the truth."
Jackal's throat feels tight as he looks into her eyes, seeing the pain and betrayal reflected there. He hates lying to her; it's tearing him apart inside. But what choice does he have? If he tells her the truth about their situation, she could end up hurt or worse. He takes a deep breath before speaking, searching for some way to make her understand without revealing too much.
"Shoko," he starts slowly, cupping her cheek with his bloody hand, "I love you more than anything in this world. You are my everything. But the people we work with... they're not like us." His voice cracks as he admits it aloud for the first time. "They have bad things planned for us, and if I don't go along with them... I could lose you." Tears stream down his face as he continues, "I know it sounds fucked up but
"And who are these people! Damn! You just use them as an excuse, but you never say who they are!" Shoko says, throwing the cell phone at Jackal, closing her fist even tighter in her other hand as she raises the other, preparing to hit Jackal, but the tears won't let her.
"Shit, Shoko! I can't just tell you that!" Jackal protests, dodging the phone and trying to catch her fists as they fly at him. "They're dangerous people, they could hurt you if I do! Just trust me, please, we can find another way out of this together." He pulls her close, trying to calm her down with his touch. "We'll get through this, I promise."
Her breathing still ragged from crying and anger, Shoko pushes him away, refusing to be consoled. "How can I trust you when all you do is lie?" she sobs, turning away from him as fresh tears stream down her face.
Shoko gets up and walks to the door of Jackal's room, not hesitating to open the door and leave. After Shoko leaves, the door opens a little wider, revealing Minseok there, with an evil smile on his face.
Jackal curses under his breath as he sees Minseok standing in the doorway, an evil smirk playing on his lips. Grabbing his cell phone off the floor, he quickly types out a message to Minseok demanding to know what's going on and why they're messing with Shoko. Then, he gets up and chases after her. Catching up to her just outside her door, he grabs her arm, spinning her around to face him. "Tell me what you want me to do, Shoko! I will do anything to make this right for us!" His voice is desperate and urgent; pleading with her to believe that he's sincere in his desire to protect her.
Shoko lets go and slaps Jackal in the face. "Do you want to know what to do to resolve this between us? It's simple. Tell me who they are, and tell me the truth of everything you've lied about until now."
Jackal recoils at the sting of her slap, wincing as his cheek burns. He hesitates for a moment before meeting her eyes once more. "I can't," he whispers hoarsely. "They'd kill me if I told you." Tears begin to stream down his face again, making him appear even more defeated and helpless than before. "Please, Shoko... I don't want this for us either, but there's nothing I can do."
He reaches out towards her as if trying to draw her back into his embrace, but she remains stubbornly out of reach. The pain in his chest intensifies, spreading throughout his body like a poison. He knows he has to say something more, but what? What could possibly convince her that he's not just using her as an excuse for his own selfish reasons?
"When you decide to be true to me, I'll be sleeping in Minseok's room until you come talk to me." Shoko turns around and walks to Minseok's room with him, and when she enters, Minseok turns around and gives Jackal the middle finger.
Jackal stands there for a moment, watching as she disappears into Minseok's room, his heart aching with the pain of her rejection and the weight of his secrets. Taking a deep breath, he turns away from their door and walks back into his own room, collapsing onto his bed in defeat. He lies there, staring up at the ceiling, trying to figure out what to do next as tears stream down his face.
All he can think of is how much she means to him; how much he loves her and wants a future with her. But right now, it seems impossible to reach that goal without revealing secrets that could get them both killed. He doesn't know what decision to make, or if there even is one. All he knows is that the next time Shoko comes looking for him, he needs to have an answer for her... because this can't go on anymore.
During the afternoon, Jackal could hear Minseok and Shoko talking in the next room. Minseok talked about how Jackal was a liar and didn't care about anyone, and Shoko just agreed, but said she still loved him, and that's why she was stupid.
Jackal listens to their conversation through the wall, his heart twisting in his chest at every word. He knows he can't let this stand; if there's even a small chance that he can change her mind and make things right between them, he has to take it. Gathering his courage, he pushes himself off the bed and strides purposefully towards Minseok's room.
He knocks on the door, then waits for Shoko to respond before speaking up in a determined voice. "Shoko, can I talk to you?"
Shoko hesitates a little, but then leaves Minseok's room and closes the door, facing Jackal. "Are you going to tell me the truth now?"
"I can't," Jackal says, his voice hoarse with despair. "But I swear to you, everything I've said and done until now has been for our sake... for us to be together." He pauses, taking a shaky breath before continuing. "Please, Shoko, just give me one more chance to prove it to you."
His eyes search hers for any sign of belief, any glimmer of hope that she might forgive him and trust him again. But the doubt in her expression only seems to deepen with every passing moment, and his heart sinks further into despair.
Shoko sighs and kisses Jackal on the cheek. "Just one chance, and that's just because I love you."
Jackal closes his eyes and exhales slowly, feeling a mixture of relief and trepidation wash over him as he hears her words. "Thank you," he whispers hoarsely before pulling her into a tight embrace, holding her close as if he'll never let go again. He promises himself that he won't screw this up; from now on, every decision he makes will be for their happiness and their future together.
When they finally break apart, Jackal looks at Shoko with renewed determination in his eyes. "So, what do you say? Want to spend the night curled up in bed with me instead?" He smirks playfully, trying to lighten the mood a bit despite the seriousness of their situation.
Shoko laughs and kisses Jackal. "Yes, I would love to." Jackal can hear Minseok punching the wall and swearing something under his breath through the door.
Jackal smiles wide and kisses her back, wrapping his arms around her waist possessively as he leads her into his room. Despite the darkness that still looms over them, this small moment of happiness feels like a ray of light shining through the cracks in their world. Together, they collapse onto the bed, cuddling and promising each other that everything will be alright... at least for tonight.
When Jackal wakes up, Shoko was watching the sun rise through the window. Meanwhile, there was a cat lying on top of her, a Siamese cat. She notices Jackal waking up and smiles. "Look, this cat came in through the window. I think he liked me."
Jackal rolls over in bed to face the window as well, a soft smile playing on his lips as he takes in the beautiful sight of sunlight streaming through the room. "He has good taste," he chuckles, reaching out to scratch behind the cat's ear as it purrs contentedly beneath Shoko's hand. "I think we should keep him... what do you say? Name him Siam?" He winks playfully at her before letting his arm slide back down, lingering near her waist suggestively.
The feel of her warm body pressed against his side is comforting and invigorating all at once; despite everything they've been through, there's still something magical about being together like this that makes him feel hopeful for their future. "So, what do you want to do today?" he asks softly, pulling her closer as the sunlight floods the room with its golden light.
