You need to find some clue as to what their true purpose is, and how it connects to that "Symbiote" you heard mentioned earlier.

As you attempt to destroy the black orb marked "Symbiote," the machine begins to hum and vibrate with unnatural power. You can feel a chill in the air, as if something malevolent is trying to resist its own destruction. A wave of energy washes over you, leaving you momentarily disoriented and weakened. It seems that destroying the Symbiote was not as simple as pressing a button...
