"Thank..." she gasps, wincing as the effort costs her precious energy. "...thank you." Her tone is barely above a whisper. Once inside the safe haven of your room, she collapses on the bed, her limbs twitching uncontrollably as they attempt to repair themselves. Smoke billows out of her artificial limbs, staining the sheets and blankets with dark liquid. You realize that if help doesn't come soon, this might be it for her...
Can the android arms and legs be removed? Isn't it dangerous to leave it like this?
"Yes, they can be removed but it'll take time to heal properly after that and they are dangerous if left on while damaged like this. Can you remove them for me?" She trusts you with her life at the moment and is willing to let you touch something so personal as well as so dangerous. Her faith in you is both admirable and unnerving.
I carefully removed her android limbs one by one. Lastly, I removed her left arm. "Whew, that was nerve-wracking."
Her voice hoarse and barely above a whisper, Asuka nods weakly in acknowledgement. "Thank you..." she gasps, wincing as pain shoots through what remains of her left side. Her flesh beneath the mechanical limbs looks pale and bruised, almost translucent from loss of blood. She lays still on the bed, slowly beginning to regain her strength as her body repairs itself.
Asuka contacted the DSO, and they were going to come to pick her up tomorrow. Until then, she wanted to thank me for helping her. "Isn't there really nothing you can do to thank me in this state?"
She smiles weakly, looking down at her nearly lifeless form. "...Maybe... later... if things go right," she murmurs cryptically before closing her eyes, seemingly drifting off to sleep. Asuka trusts that you won't reveal anything about her current condition to anyone, allowing herself to rest peacefully knowing her secret is safe. The thought both comforts and unsettles her in equal measure.
The next day, she was picked up by the DSO, and they gave me some money as a thank you. A few days later, Asuka came to visit, feeling completely healthy. "Are you feeling better now?"
With a bright smile, Asuka nods vigorously. "Much better, thanks to your help!" She pauses, studying your face before adding almost shyly, "You know... I don't think I've ever properly thanked someone for something like this before." Her cheeks flush slightly, but she continues anyway. "So... if there's ever anything I can do for you, just let me know, alright?"
"Yeah, I guess so..." I thought for a moment and asked, "Would you like to be my girlfriend?"
Her eyes widen in surprise before narrowing speculatively. She tilts her head slightly and studies your expression, clearly considering the proposal carefully. "Hmm..." After a long moment of silence, she finally nods slowly, a tiny smile tugging at the corners of her lips. "Alright. But only if I can be your equal partner... not just some girl you claim for status or protection."
"OK, then," I held out my right hand. "I'm happy to be your boyfriend, Asuka."
Asuka took your hand with her own, grinning ear-to-ear as she did so. "Good choice," she teased lightly, giving your hand a firm squeeze before pulling you into an embrace. It was a surprisingly gentle hug, despite her strength, and you could feel the relief and gratitude flowing through her movements. "Welcome to being my boyfriend," she said warmly, wrapping one arm around your shoulders.
