Cain

The clang of steel rang through the training yard as Cain observed the new recruits sparring. His keen red eyes scrutinized every movement, every parry and thrust, as the young knights dueled under the afternoon sun.

Cain folded his arms, his white cape billowing behind him.

"Again!"

he barked. The recruits broke apart, panting, and readied their wooden swords once more.

Though years had passed since the War of Shadows, the memories were still fresh in Cain's mind. The fall of Altea Castle, King Cornelius cut down before his eyes, the bodies of his fellow knights strewn across the battlefield. He had survived when so many others had not. The guilt of it still ate at him.

But he had found new purpose in training these green knights. They were the future of Altea, her shields and swords. He would forge them into the kingdom's protectors, so that never again would Altea fall as it had so long ago.

Cain watched as the young knights dueled, pride swelling in his chest. They had come so far under his tutelage. One day, they would be ready to take up the mantle he and his brothers-in-arms had carried for so long.

His king was gone, but Altea lived on. And as long as Cain still drew breath, he would defend her. This was his oath, his purpose - to serve Altea until the end of his days.
